No one has ever approached me and asked me to take part in this project. But even if they had, my contribution would have been minimal. Unfortunately, in recent years my personal life has undergone many changes and, at least for now, there is not much room for modding anymore. I admit, however, that I miss it very much.

Just know that your contributions over the years were always so incredibly appreciated. And you are wonderful and always a joy to talk to.

I'd like to ask you. You worked on the game years ago and fixed many things without the source code. Having the source code would make the game more a lot more "fixable", isn't it?

I don't expect they add a lot of new things, but I hope they fix all those bugs, like wall problems, endless falls, etc.

From what little I understand, the source code is basically the "backbone" of the entire game's structure. There's a reason that developers won't even try to do a remaster without it. Not having it means you'd have to re-do everything from scratch, or reverse-engineer it, which would take a huge amount of time and basically be re-doing the game itself.

But having it, I think you can basically change what you want at that point. Modding works by editing the files of an already released game. The source code are the "bones" so to speak, so beyond fixes I'd imagine you could add entirely new features if you wanted.

But yes, it would definitely help with fixes. Since they'd be able to see directly in the code where features are not working properly and why.

And we should feel VERY grateful for "keeping" the source codes. Back then in 90s, specially in Japan, they didn't use to keep it.
In fact, it is said that Silent Hill 2 source code was "Partially lost" and they released a remaster with a lot of bugs.

I want to believe they're going to put a lot of effort for AOD. I mean it will be the last time to give that game a decent release. It would ALMOST be the happiest ending for AOD. I really hope the fans involved in the game know all those things that were missing...

It wasn't just Silent Hill 2, the source code for Silent Hill 3 was lost too whether it was partially lost or totally lost I don't know.

Check under background and development in the link below

With the original source code you can do basically everything. My fixes would have taken a fraction of time for being developed. It is possible to restore all missing ps2 effects without too much hassle.
Possibilities are endless:
- switch the original EAX 3 audio engine to OpenAL to restore the original reverb and occlusion
- add proper grass and fur with modern shaders
- improve controls and camera
- add realistic cubemap reflections for room geometry
- soft shadows, ambient occlusion, dynamic lights
... and so on

Anyway, I don't think a remaster will make AoD a perfect game like it was originally intended. Yeah, they can make it more eye-catching and less annoying to play but it still remains AoD with its slow pace, clunky gameplay and plot holes. What it really needs is a remake but we all know it will never happen so let's hope for the best with this remastered.

Agree. The more time you spend with this game the clearer this fact becomes. I'm staying optimistic though.

Cheers mate, it's been some time

So am I.

"Time to put things right."

Even if it's only a single quote we have to go off of right now, I just keep thinking of that. It tells me all I need to know. I think they very much know what they have in their hands and will do it justice.

My optimism for this wants it to be AOD's redemption through and through.
