Apparently what PS1 did was to save the game for you right when the level begins. This way the level starts with the items you had.

So it was never really a level select but rather some sort of save states.
Level select should have your pickups reset, except for weapons, which should all be available, I think that would be a fair solution.

The remasters team deserves better treatment than that though. It's a smaller and more focused team tuned into keeping the classic nostalgia alive, and for the first time we have passionate fans working on it.
Fans that have also unselfishly contributed amazing things to this community for free.
They have done more than prove that they are capable of great things in this industry. And honestly I hope this opens way bigger doors than TR for them because mainstream gaming needs passionate and creative people more than anything with the amount of generic crap being released.

Don't get me wrong though, most of the feedback given and revisions made are great and comes from a place of love/care for this franchise. But some of it turns into popularity contests, personal attack parades and endless obsessive rants, scaring new fans away.

The only way forward for TR is something that appeals to a wide audience because that pays the bills and allows for more of it.
If unhinged fan banter emphasizing small imperfections can ruin the experience for longtime fans, it can be even more devastating for newcomers.
I'd also like to assume that none of the Aspyr devs and modders take the criticism personally, and that they know when to ignore the more unreasonable requests concerning features that shouldn't be a high priority. This is why none here should abstain from voicing their concerns. There's no such thing as "consumer entitlement", that's just a buzzword invented by companies and their shills, meant to desensitise consumers towards dirty anti-consumer tricks. That's more of a general point and it has nothing to do with Aspyr or the devs involved.

There were fans involved but these are still a commercial product, not something the community threw together for free. You are entitled to criticism of something you've spent money on.

I miss that - the color of the water from the original.

I remember that earlier in Tr 2 in the first level in the cave near the tiger, the water was beautiful green and seemed to glow. In the remaster, you can't even see that there is any water. Overall, I don't like that in the remaster they eliminate the density of snow, rain, water color, or bubbles in the water. As if the developers were afraid of the fans.

I improved the snow, rain and bubbles in the mod. But I can't add the color of the water.
TR2 on PC seemed to have crystal clear water, but the scene lighting and the surrounding textures gave the bodies of water an distinctive look. TR1 on the other hand had turquose water in some versions, whereas it was also clear (or very light blue) on PC.

The tweaks to the engine might make it possible to create different color water effects so that each body of water has a distinct color. Clear might be the universally functional solution, but it would be great to have murky water in stagnant bodies as well as reddish water in those TR1 atlantean pyramid pools that come in contact with the biological growths.

They didn't even have to release this trilogy this year since it's only been 28 years since TR1. Imagine what two more years of quality control would've produced.

Another bit that bummed me out about Golden Mask was the poor handling of this little glimpse of the Kingdom we can see at the end of Furnace of the Gods.

I was hampered by the (creative!) way this texture was applied to the OG game, meaning I had to darken the trees and overexpose the sky pure white. In an ideal world this would have been a proper skybox with beams of light shining through the crack, but oh well.

I've just noticed they didn't even try to make the rock texture seamless, so I'll work on that next. Then it's onto the red and blue Xian rocks...

Even if updates stopped, at some point people are gonna get further with the mods and at the very least the PC version will be fully fixed.

There must be a fifth patch. Otherwise we Italian users will be left with low-quality translations and untranslated level titles forever and ever.

But that would not be official.

Mods are fleeting, and difficult to install for many inexperienced users, so it would be better that the improvements were present in the official product.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's low quality, you said they aren't broken or bad yourself in the translation thread, only that they could be improved (and I agree, in TR1 which never had an official Italian localization many things could be adapted differently).

Why not make a more literal translations mod now? The translations were added in Patch 4 and credited. They are just text files! Not like one just be wary of Kanji unused in the font table etc...italian uses the Latin alphabet with accents - they're all very much there
