^This .

Difficulty that comes from chaotic level design , random uninspired layout and insane geometry isn't the type I'd appreciate , in fact it feels cheap and lazy (and that , imo , can be said about easily 50% of TR3) , difficulty that relies on cleverness , innovative design from developers and requires good planning and thinking IS appreciate-able for me (TR4) .

Not to sound too harsh on TR3 (considering I LOVE half of the game and TR3 Gold is a masterpiece) , but imo , that game caused more harm than good to the franchise , it helped back then in pushing the idea that the games are getting boring and repetitive , and formed this fake perspective that Core is a lazy studio that never tried major new things after TR1 (when in fact , it was Eidos who never gave them time and space to try new things forcing them to sneeze a game each year) , and also , caused people to overlook the innovation , clever new elements and enhancements and creative changes Core added to TR4 thinking that the latter is going to be more of the same , which wasn't how it truly was . and that caused damage to its sales and reception (going down from 6.5 million sales of TR3 to 5 millions with TR4 is pretty noticeable).

Sorry TR3 fans

Now that I think of it, they're both hard. I believe TR3 relies on the enviroment to confuse the player, with things like uncommon structures or darkness. TR4 relies a lot on puzzles which use the same mechanic as the previous games, but innovate it a bit more.
TR4 puzzles are hard, but the number one thing that made this game so hard (at least for me) was the confusing level design. Like the levels being interconnected, you had to complete one level to get an item, then complete the other to get another item, to finally complete the remaining level. Missing items usually result in endless boring backtracking. Some levels were just unnecessary. And the game requires a large amount of logic to get through, which is good in a sense. Take those elementals enemies for example. Only by using logic you'd find out that you had to jump into the water to extinguish the fire spirits (believe me, it took me a while to find out when I played the game for the first time). TR4 is very creative when it comes to making things difficult. If I remember correctly, the only time in TR3 you had to use that kind of logic was the food chain "puzzle" in Lost City of Tinnos. But again, I wonder how much logic you'd need to use to find out that standing near bird statues would kill the spirits in TR4.

Honestly, I'm biased as hell because TR3 is my favorite TR game (in the same way you're biased about TR4 ), but I disagree with this. As far as difficulty is concerned, I don't agree with it to an extent too. In TR3, every step you take is instant death, and it's usually in the most unexpected way. THAT combined with the darkness and limited saves the PS1 version had, made the game borderline unfair to the players. Almost as if Core intentionally designed it that way so the players would get get frustrated and give up. But I always considered TR3 as "the game created for the hardcore fans", not the casual gamer. If I had to make a list of the TR games I'd recommend a friend of mine to play, TR3 would always be at the bottom of my list, even though it's my favorite game.

New render by me

I know this one is not TR but it was made as the same time as the other one, so consider it as a bonus
