Best zombie movie?
I'd say 28 Days Later, looked upon by many as the one that revolutionized the zombie genre. Not only is it arguably the best zombie movie ever made, it's one of the best modern horror movies ever made. Everything from the cinematography, characters, tension, direction, story, is nailed to a T. It deserves its title as the quintessential zombie film IMO. It's also the first zombie film to introduce the popular fast zombies.
Night of the Living Dead and OG Dawn of the Dead are the next best zombie movies IMO. Romero (R.I.P.) is a legend. Also Shaun of the Dead is probably my most-watched zombie movie, I've watched it dozens of times on DVD. I applaud WWZ for trying something different with the sub-genre, but it has so many plot holes and implausibilities/miraculous survivals that I just can't take it seriously. Add in the terrible ending, constant shaky cams that make it impossible to tell WTF is going on (thanks PG-13) and lack of gore (or hell, blood) the few times it IS shown (because, again, PG-13 zombie movie ) and you have what I and many others consider to be a mediocre film at best, even ignoring the fact that it has nothing to do with the book past the title. It was way too sanitized and contrived for my taste. No, gore doesn't make a good film, but when you're talking about millions of flesh-eating zombies that can only be killed via headshot, a bit of gritty violence and bloodletting is to be expected. The classic Resident Evil games even had a disclaimer when you first loaded the game, "This game contains scenes of explicit violence and gore". How I miss that. I pretty much think that Night of the Living Dead (OG and Remake), Dawn of the Dead (OG and Remake) and ZombieLand are the best zombie movies ever. I enjoyed 28 days later and Shaun of the Dead but not as much as I thought I would. Still classics though. Resident Evil movies are just popcorn flicks to watch with your partner on a boring evening or something, no good meat there.
I was enjoying the REC. movies until the plot twist in the first movie, then I stopped watching it and prob won't watch it since I do not like it when Zombies are mixed with the supernatural in such extremes way, I do not like possession movies they make me really uneasy. Maybe you will/can look past that and still enjoy them. Last edited by JsotoTRSaga; 06-10-19 at 13:20. |

I recently watched The Dead Don't Die by Jim Jarmusch but I didn't like it.
I watched it for two reasons: 1) Jim Jarmusch is a good director 2) In the cast there's also Selena Gomez (this is the main reason) Unfortunately the poor Selena

Dawn of the Dead (1978), beyond a doubt. This movie really codified the zombie genre, and did so while being a merciless satire of consumer culture. Every zombie movie made since owes more than a little to this one. The remake isn't all that bad, either.
What it was trying to do had already been done by other movies, and better. Want to watch a zombie apocalypse movie with trenchant social satire? Watch Dawn of the Dead. Want to watch a zombie movie that's a flat-out comedy? Watch Shaun of the Dead. This movie either needed to be funnier, or scarier. Or both. Instead, it just settled for dry and deadpan. There were so many scenes that could be described as "almost funny", but few that actually were. |

World War Z - That one scene where the zombies tower on top of each other to climb over a tall wall has inspired many other films and video games to copy that specific move.

Throwing a grenade on a plane that merely blows a hole in the wall ('cuz it would totes do that) then buckling up after it goes haywire and miraculously surviving a plane crash that happens to be near a medical research facility AND a metal spike through his lung? Zombies slowing down as soon as they're about to get him and getting stopped by a fridge when they were flying through the air and scurrying up walls? A cop getting mowed down by a semi truck through a crowded street that was NOWHERE TO BE SEEN in the previous shot? Pitt getting zombie blood in his mouth and not turning? Pitt leaving his cell phone on in Korea? Miraculously picking the right combo of vials for a camouflaging virus without getting instructions from the scientists who happened to be on the security cams? Shaking off 2 car collisions and snagging an RV that somebody conveniently left in the street with keys in the ignition and a loaded shotgun during a zombie apocalypse which somehow nobody bothered to take THE WHOLE TIME and somehow never once running into traffic during said zombie outbreak after that? Zombies that can somehow detect infected hosts while sprinting full speed at them (nevermind the convoluted logic of already infected zombies needing healthy hosts)? Israelis building a wall and having no one watching the outside of it? Spanish kid cheering after his parents were killed? There's (plenty) more, but that's a pretty damning list. 28 Days Later, this is not. Oh, and the family was so useless that I personally wouldn't have cared if they got ripped apart by zombies. In fact, that might've actually IMPROVED the film, but alas, it couldn't have happened because, PG-13 limitations. Last edited by KManX89; 07-10-19 at 17:23. |

I will never forgive WWZ for having almost nothing in common with the book. The book fantastic, and there ONE idea in the movie that's from the book. (Recommend the audio book. VERY well done.)
28 Days Later was my first thought. It deals with so many concepts well. Very well done overall. But I enjoy almost all zombie stuff. I just like the genre. Of course, 28 Days Later is just a place holder until Peter Clines Ex-Heroes gets made into a movie. Last edited by Dennis's Mom; 09-10-19 at 13:13. |
