Exclamation Is Lara Dreaming?

Hello.

In this post I wanna remind you about lara's adventures (only for 1-5).

She can jump like an rabbit. (How?)

She can run, even after falling of a cliff. (Breaks leg)

She can hop to water from 300 meters on a head and survive. (Neck from steel?)

She can survive without food and water. (How?)

She can hold on a wall without losing grip. (How?)

I know, it's just a game, but that's ridiculous!

Maybe she was dreaming about things that happened to her previously on her life? But it’s all broken and blurry, with some dreamy stuff (rabbit jump, jumping to water from high places). Then she wakes up as AOD Lara and we get to see her real realistic life... With retcons of course...

Just video games and good ol' TR Logic. It's good to have the TR series as geographical explorative outlet with cool mysteries, folklore and legends to unravel. (r/woosh)

Bless Tomb Raider.

It's a game dating from 1996. People didn't care much about realism back then. They played the game to get away from reality in fact. Now times have changed and everything needs to be as relateable as possible and therefore realistic.

Actually there was an issue of comics series published by Top Cow, and the games were based off Lara’s life in that universe. The games were previewed in a musuem dedicated to her IIRC. She had problems with her parents and boyfriend in that universe, that’s how we got the Angelina films’ story, which was copy-pasted to LAU and Reboot. Shame on you Top Cow...

It's not "just a game" and it's not "90's game mechanics" and it's not a "limitation of technology".

She's a cartoon in her appearance, why should her world and her interactions with it be any different? It is simply deliberate style. And all deliberate style is always influenced by a limitation of something, mostly the mind's ability to focus more than not.

This is especially true in tomb raider IV where the enemies can jump just as far Lara.

Exactly, and technological limitations have likely played a big part in this. I don’t think we can truly say what the series would have been like without such limitations.

Tomb Raider, while ambitious and revolutionary, was still a product of its time. It was at least partially based on what technology had to offer back then. Making her and her surroundings cartoony was an artistic choice, which also happened to be decided by uncontrollable factors. In a way they were forced into it, because it worked out for the best with much more primitive mechanics.

Pointing this out isn’t meant to discredit the developers. They had to be creative to flesh out a concept in the most effective way possible. To me, the balance between “realism” and fantasy ended up being just right, so they pulled it off perfectly. This balance raises an interesting juxtaposition that ultimately is up to interpretation.

Some people like to overthink this sense of amiguity by imagining the “intended” vision by the developers. I think filling in these missing gaps is fine to make the game more lively and comprehensible in your head, but in the end there’s no definite (or any logical) answer.
