One doesn't just get charged without being presented with a bill. He had to sign for it.

Moral: always check the bill.

For me this isn't really newsworthy as I work for a chip and pin business and I can tell you that these occur fairly often.

I've had a call where someone was charged £100,000 for a coffee.

Whilst I'm sure there are circumstances that are intentional The devices we supply sometimes do freeze and lock-up (assuming it was one of ours or possibly a competitor's that wasn't great).

So you could input 2.10 but the device doesn't respond, so you then enter more digits and possibly press enter and boom the mistake has happened.

Then the employee rings us up panicking asking us to cancel the transaction.

Most likely because the waiter had to input the price manually onto the credit card machine. It may seem like it was done on purpose because it made the news but this sort of thing can happen if the waiter is distracted.

I used to work at a hotel in England and the prices of beer were all at around £5.

Holy ****! So that's why my intuition was telling me to always withdraw money before going to a resaurant and never pay with a card.

I had a Diet Coke in a pub once. £3.10. Never doing that again!

Wetherspoons is the place to go for cheap alcohol not hotels.

£5.50 for a pint is already insane!

I think they should have been able to reverse and/or credit the charge when it occurred. Strange, that nobody noticed that big of a transaction. I don’t believe you can just tap for that amount so you had to sign for it. Would assume you would notice when you added a tip to the bill.

This was in a hotel so most likely the charge was on his hotel bill for the whole stay, which you usually sign for when you check in and give your credit card.

Idk what's it like elsewhere in the world but when I worked as a sales assistant we had terminals which needed manual input, they weren't synced with the till and also you needed to include the zeros when entering the amount. And isn't there a "00" key on those? You could easily slip after entering 5 5 0 (which would give you 5.50) and then the 00 would up it to 55,000

You mean like this?

Makes sense. I could see something like that happen.
