Original Colour Palette
I was wondering if anyone knows how to obtain the colour palette used in TR1? I've tried comparing the colours used in Lara's textures to some 256 VGA palettes in google images but they don't match up.
Ideally I'd like the full range so I can pull samples for use in painting textures accurate to the time. |

Doesn't the palette depend on the the video card - like, the display adapter?
I don't think raw texture data will match up to any palette, besides - because it hasn't been parsed by the video card in the context of everythin' else, if you view it outside of the game. I could be wrong, though. I'm sorry I'm not much help. I have a ReShade preset that I use with dgVoodoo for TR1-TR5 (or TombATI's OpenGL solution, in the case of TR1) that sort of emulates the colors and brightness of - not necessarily the PS1 version by itself, but compressed footage of the PS1 version which you can find on YouTube. I'd be happy to share, if you would find it helpful as reference. It's not 1:1, but a fair approximation for nostalgia's sake... Last edited by tomblover; 14-12-18 at 06:04. |

There isn't one palette used through the whole game.
On the PC, every level has its own 256-colour palette. Each colour is 15-bit RGB. You can make these colours any colours you like, but there are only 256 of them. On the PSX, every texture has its own 16-colour palette. Each colour is 15-bit BGR. I'm not sure how the Saturn does it, but I assume it's similar to what the PSX does. |

Ah I see, I thought there might have been one overarching palette like on early consoles or old CGA graphical games.
So the source textures are pretty much any colour, but the game only renders 256 for the level? |
