I know it's not happening but I think overall Square have been good owners of the TR franchise. I don't think it's necessary for the franchise to move in order to blossom. I think Square have been quite generous in terms of budget and time when it comes to TR.
Of course, behind the scenes it could all be different from what I think. But I think Japanese companies are overall more long-term focused and I prefer TR's owners to be that way than some other options. I do think Sony would also be a good home for TR, apart from the obvious problem of no longer releasing on xbox. I think if they owned it, PC releases would still continue. But I don't know that it would be that much different from Square owning it. |

Sony owning Square Enix is completely bad for other SE franchises. Because Sony will just use them to make Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider games for PS5.(Since Sony doesn't care about franchises that can only sell few million copies per game.)

The wording of the Square Enix statement is particular. Not having an official offer does not mean that you were not approached, and that buyers have not shown interest. Neither is your disinterest in selling.
While Zenimax was open to buyers, I believe these sort of business transactions are most often meant to remain under wraps. Bloomberg has had an excellent track records with video game rumors in the past few years. SE could also be playing a game to muster even more interest, athough technically, certain regulations and laws could prohibit these sort of behaviours. This statement would not put them in jeopardy as it's not even indicative as to what's happening. They have not entirely denied that this is true, and have not said it's untrue. They've only said this information does not stem officially from Square Enix, and that they have not received an official offer. They stated their position on the matter, but they are also subject to the market evolving rapidly in the past few months. Something is weird with their exclusive deals, something weird enough for me to question what exactly is happening behind the scenes. Then again, I do not know what kind of relationship Microsoft entertains with SE behind the scenes. While their western studios have often shown interest in Xbox, their Japanese studios have not. It's impossible for me to fathom that Microsoft does not care about the Final Fantasy franchise. There's just too much money to be made there, and they are missing on FF7R, Project Athia (which has been renamed now) and FFXVI. Impossible that a strategic player like Microsoft would just let that slip. Last edited by amiro1989; 16-04-21 at 14:28. |
