Core: Exploration/Puzzles. I consider those one and the same for gameplay purposes. It's the defining feature of the classics.
LAU: Ease-of-entry, meaning it excels in being something you can just jump into and play. Reboot: Combat, though I'd really only say so because the games place such an emphasis on it. Not particularly amazing otherwise, but it's definitely one of the defining points of the trilogy. |

CORE : Difficulty, platforming, level design, secret system.
LAU : Boss fights, extra content and Lara's moves (Underworld). REBOOT : Puzzles (Shadow) and combat (even though I think cover based doesn't fit Tomb Raider) Last edited by Chamayoo; 26-02-24 at 13:49. |

Core: Gameplay and level design (although the latter seems to zig-zag across the games).
LAU: Replayability, dialogue, creative puzzles incorporated even into boss fights and graphics (you could argue the Reboot trilogy has better graphics but it looks rather uncanny to me in part due to the heavy approach to hyper-realistic graphics which looks dull to me). Reboot: Combat |

Classic: Coolest Lara. Atmosphere for days. Platforming that didn't feel safe and hand hold-y. Levels that forced non-linear exploration and felt like puzzles to solve. Overall the most iconic music too, though Legend and Anniversary had a damn good try at out-doing them.
LAU: Though individually Keeley isn't my favourite Lara voice (Keeley was awesome but Queen Jonell wins for me), considering the overall cast I'd say the voice acting really peaked here. There was more emotion and you could take it more seriously than the classic voice acting, but there was still enough larger-than-life camp and bombast in it that it was more entertaining than the Survivor games' characters. Well balanced. Survivor: I really do enjoy the physics-based puzzles, that often require logic to solve too. Lke I said above many classic levels were huge puzzles within themselves which I loved, but the methods of building them were rather simple - simply explore and find the keys to these other doors over here. Some of the optional tombs and, as of Shadow, main tombs do really force you to use your brain sometimes. If we could get levels that had that open non-linear exploration of the classics, but also throwing in some of these physics-based puzzles, that would be really amazing. Core era: everything was excellent until TLR and Chronicles.
Crystal Dynamics Era: Lara going after a super legendary relic. Excalibur! Keeley Hawes voicing Lara Croft. Keeley had a voice that sounded like a cross between Shelly Blond and Judith Gibbins. Lara's new acrobatics. I hated the survivor trilogy. Nothing superior. |
