All I care about before starting is Evie Hopefully I can choose to play mostly as her instead of Jacob.

Mirage coming to Steam later this month. I guess they work fast.
How many more AC games are missing from steam? I think Valhalla is. I wouldn't know cause all the ones I played I did that on UBI connect. https://x.com/assassinscreed/status/1842595613646463102 |

Assassin's Creed Mirage was the last Assassin's Creed missing from Steam, as Valhalla found its way on the platform at the end of 2022. I wasn't really that interested in the last 2 installments, it felt like something was missing and they started to feel terribly stale for me. Assassin's Creed Odyssey was the last one I really enjoyed, but the older titles are part of my all-time favorites in general. Syndicate and Unity were superb and so memorable... I really miss that era.

Had to revisit Assassin's Creed 2 (II) to realize what might be the forthcoming future of the series. The puzzles indicate the nature of the game and what looks like to be soon useful. Joan of Arc, Garden of Eden, etcetera.

I bailed after Unity. Can anyone tell me in 1 sentence whether there's been ANY actual major progress on the modern story or is it still stuck in the perpetual cycle of nothingburger so that Ubisoft can make sequels for the next 1000 years?

They have gone back to actually having a bit more of a modern-day storyline (like, there are actual modern-day characters whom you follow across the games again) but honestly, even though it's there, it's pretty bad and boring and can't hold a candle to AC1 and AC2's modern day storylines. Although one interesting thing they have done is that they've started interweaving the past events you see inside the Animus a bit more with the modern-day events, I'll give them credit for that. I think the main issue is just that the writing is generally quite bad (both in and outside the Animus) and the modern-day protagonist in Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla was super bland and forgettable.

Shame, as sucky as Desmon was, working through 5 games towards his finale WAS fun, felt it was going somewhere. Obviously it went nowhere but u get my point guess the franchise is just good for history tours now, still fun but that modern hook early on really held it all together |

I mean, the modern-day storyline in Origins-Valhalla does go places (it's not like in some of those post-AC3 games where you were just some no-name Abstergo game tester or sth lol). There's a plot and somewhat of a sense of progression. It's just that that plot is badly written and mostly boring xD.
But yeah, regardless of the modern-day storyline, I'd say Origins and Odyssey are worth playing if you have the time (Odyssey is a real time suck). Valhalla... not so much (even though in terms of the modern-day storyline it's probably actually the most interesting of the three). |

Well I wouldn't be surprised if the franchise was only meant to last until 2012 which was supposed to be the end of the world irl due to the Mayan calendar and it coincided perfectly with the in-game lore.
Which I'm surprised that I've never heard anyone talking about this, because honestly they way they pulled it off with a game each year building up to that was amazing. |

It was clearly meant to end with AC3 and the shift in Ubisoft management by that time decided it was too profitable to let go. Not that I blame them for that, but the games have gone from having interesting multilayered stories to part baked historical sims that could be any IP.
