................................................. and that's a positive? With respect, I do not think so.

LC is a lone wolf, makes decisions on her own for good or bad.

Introducing or it feels more like shoe-horning in additional characters via the comms, particularly male ones, telling her what to do where to go or more usually just inanely wittering on even smacks of being patronising both in regard to LC and the player.

I find it annoying.

Whether you find it positive or negative, but it was enough for CD to adapt it into all of their games they developed thus far. I also prefer my TR games to be chit-chat free but you can't deny that this feature from TR5 defined the writing structure of its successors from the LAU trilogy (except Anniversary) to the Reboot trilogy.

Hmm, a positive thing to say about this game: the puzzles were fairly challenging, it had a few decent boss battles.

Just from the lighting (or lack thereof) I can tell you're not using tomb5, you may want to, it has a lot of QoL improvements and more importantly, tons of bug fixes
releases page
installation and usage guide
changelog for full list of fixes

Thumbs up

Just finished my 2nd playthrough of Tomb Raider Chronicles, the only other Tomb Raider game I played twice in its entirety is Tomb Raider II (the one that introduced me to the series).
I was just going to play the first level and Sinking Sub (got some old saves placed strategically throughout the game) but got carried away...
Still very good! Red Alert! would definitely be the best level if it wasn't significantly bugged, but even with that handicap it's among the game's best.

I guess this is an unpopular opinion but the VCI levels are by far and away the highlight of Chronicles for me. Rome and Russian Base were environments done better in the previous games and I just never enjoyed the Ireland levels, the puzzles were too tedious and vague.

Core actually took some creative risks with VCI and they mostly paid off. If not for some unfortunate bugs in Red Alert! I think that section would be remembered more fondly.

The VCI episode is definitely meant to be the highlight of Tomb Raider Chronicles. Personally, I liked the Irish episode just as much (it's also a different take on the established formula) but again, if Red Alert! wasn't significantly bugged then it would stand alone as the best thing in the game - as such it's merely very good. Because yes, the VCI segment shows some actually forward-thinking gameplay (and I really should write a proper review for this game). Is it quintessentially Tomb Raider? You're not raiding a tomb so no - some old-timers will have a problem with that, one could make the argument that this shows the devs were really itching to do something different than a Tomb Raider game, personally I welcomed the change in theme (just as I did when it occurred in the previous games) because of the diversity it provides and such shifts never happened at the expense of the overall story (Lara Croft still died in a tomb at the end of the day!).
You want an example of something like a change in tone that is actually jarring and hurts the overall experience? Try Fahrenheit.

I agree, VCI is not a tomb but really has the TR soul in it ! It’s a very good set of levels and it’s always fresh to have a moment outside a tomb.
