AOD has the franchises most smooth, fluid, best looking animations.

Sarcasm at its best...

Why didn’t they use sped-up AoD animations as place-holders? |

That animation is probably from AoD. If you do a swan dive into water in AoD and then keep swimming, Lara will do this animation for a few seconds before she uses the normal swimming animation. It would look silly if it was the only swimming animation, nonetheless since Lara isn't weaing flippers and there's no way that she can propel herself like that with just her legs moving up and down. |

Like I said, I really doubt that that was the regular swimming animation. Definitely looks more like "sprint swimming" to me.
On the other hand, I absolutely love the sliding animations and the wall/block climbing animations. Also the way she uses her own weight to propel herself up onto a thin ledge. The only animations I'm not a huge fan of are this swimming one and maybe the pole swinging but everything else looks great IMO. |

What's interesting is that some of the new animations they created use the exact same standing position from TR1-5, and the swingpole animation seems to use the same mid-air reach pose from the classics, as well. I.e. the new animations were built on top of existing animations from the classics.
Maybe these reused poses were also placeholders. Who knows? Honestly I wouldn't have been mad if the old animations had been used. Probably an unpopular opinion, but I'm so familiar with them and they're pretty decent. And I mean, look at the reboot games still using some (questionable) motion captured animations from 2008...They didn't know it back in '06, but there would be a precedent for this kind of animation reuse in the future. |
