Thank you very much, i'm doing it in my spare time otherwise if I had a free week, i'd have them all sorted and done much faster.

Came across a new super resolution scaler, ESRGAN, seen used for a recent Morrowind texture upscaling project. Wanted to compare results since it's been trained for fine detail photo upscaling. This post isn't intended to persuade the OP to use a different scaler btw, just as a follow-up to my previous post which mentioned more photo realistic scalers, since some might find it useful.

Here were my steps for the tests below:
  1. Scale source 400% (bicubic).
  2. Scale source 25% (bicubic).
  3. Sharpen source using Unsharp Mask (subtle).
  4. Scale source using ESRGAN with a 0.8 interpolation between the two pre-trained neural network models (using the 'RRDB_ESRGAN_x4' model exclusively results in exaggerated artifacts).
  5. Scale result 50% (bicubic).
  6. Blend the result with the previous waifu2x scale using a Color blend mode for less color noise.

Result:

The reason for the first 3 steps, preparing the source texture, were due to finding if the source textures are left as-is is causes either ESRGAN or the pretrained models used to pick up on the fine noise and output highly exaggerated scaling based on it. By resizing then sharpening it initially the noise is reduced enough for decent results.

200% zoom GIF comparison:

Edit: I compared results from ESRGAN's pretrained models to some known black and white test images (not these textures) from Topaz Gigapixel, and Topaz' scaler had the more natural scaling results for the particular images compared. Unsure how comparable it is for color images however but thought I'd note this. Training ESRGAN with Tomb Raider specific images would likely yield better results.

I was wondering if that would also work on TR fonts and such. Could TR fonts be upscaled and used in the actual game?

If you post an example (either here or via PM) I could check how well it upscales. I expect waifu2x would be best suited in this case.

Well TBH I don't know how to rip the game's font. I've seen it a few times here and there, though. Also, I don't know if it is stored as an image. It would be great if the whole set of textures and UI/font/s could be upscaled.

How can I rip original textures? Put my hands on Topaz Gigapixel and would like to test it out... for sport.

BTW I'm still available to give you a hand if you want.

Sorry I haven't been working on this much, had a lot going on after christmas but I intend to get back to this some point next month. If you own Glidos, there is a guide on how to extract the original textures from the game itself here:

http://www.glidos.net/retext.html?lang=en#create

It is quite a good alternate way of being able to play TR1 and I feel it personally has more options than Dos Box.
