I've had it explained to me before, but that was at least a year or two ago and I cannot remember the reason or which thread it was in |

That's what we thought but there's more to it.
I've done a lot of modding in my time, to the point where I mod Custom Levels which are higher file sized then TR5 without having issues. The issue with TR5 is, all the modding tools that we have don't support TR5 triggers for example flip effects that change the room (Hence why the bird statue room stays the same in Streets of Rome) or the window breaking after the boss fight in Trajan's Markerts. The modding tools don't even support the X-Ray machine in Escape with the Iris. We need a modding tool that can support TR5 triggers, this would make modders like me truly happy so a TR5 remaster could eventually happen if this solution gets resolved first. |

I suppose technically you could 'remake' the levels once TR5Main comes out, but who knows how far away that is?

There's that too, but that is more realistic to work then someone rebuilding a whole new modding tool just for TR5.
Other alternative is using the TRLE and using plugins to try and make it as similar to TR5 as possible. |

What else does it require to do an HD remaster for TR5 besides time?

They just said it! It could be modding tools that support TR5’s new features so that it does not break the levels. Or, there’s an alternative, TR5Main, a project by MontyTRC to modernize the classics, more specifically the TR5 .exe.

TR5Main won't be compatible with TR5 out of the box, should be noted while we're at it. It's intended to be of more general use for custom levels, but it might be possible to port the levels, with some effort and using TR5Main scripting.
